INTREPID UNION SPY BALLOON
2 U.S. postage stamps featuring the Civil War Union spy balloon Intrepid. The 20c stamp was issued in 1983 and the 50c stamp was cut from a USPS aerogramme issued in 1995.
The
Intrepid
was a hydrogen gas balloon built for use by the Union Army Balloon Corps for aerial reconnaissance purposes during the Civil War. It was designed to make ascensions to high elevations with telegraph equipment and an operator. It was the balloon of choice for Chief Aeronaut Thaddeus Lowe (1832-1913) during the Battle of Fair Oaks, where the Intrepid's flight was instrumental in saving the Union Army from what would have been a sure defeat at the hands of the Confederates.
Both are in mint, post office fresh condition.
