    Description

Unlisted artist. Published by Lee & Walker, Philadelphia, 1861. Very scarce. Color lithograph memorial print shows Ellsworth, the first Union hero of the Civil War, standing on a Confederate flag. Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth, a friend of Abraham Lincoln, was the Commanding Officer of the 11th New York Voluntary
Infantry Regiment, a Zouave unit. He was killed shortly after his regiment arrived in Washington and began the occupation of Alexandria, Virginia. While securing Alexandria, Ellsworth noticed a Confederate flag flying above an inn. Ellsworth, assisted by three of his men, climbed to the inn's roof and cut down the flag. On his way back downstairs, Ellsworth was killed by a shotgun blast to his chest. Corporal Francis Brownell immediately killed the innkeeper who had shot Ellsworth.
This print was once the cover of sheet music for Ellsworth's Funeral March.
Please Note: This print is glued to a heavy card stock and can not be removed.
It would look great framed with a cobalt blue or cardinal red photo mat. The secured print measures 11 1/4 x 14 3/4 inches.
This print is vibrant but shows signs of age with areas of discoloration. There is a small dent under one of Colonel Ellsworth's eyes. The back shows signs that it was previously framed.
Please see photos for all details.
